This might be obvious, but now the stats are in – 2023 was a big year for renewable energy!
The UK Government revealed a 4 year high for renewable energy production. In 2023 alone, this would have been enough to provide power to each of the 28 million homes in the UK.
Last year, as a share of total generation, renewables increased to 44.5%, outpacing fossil fuel production. Of this, it was offshore wind production that saw the biggest increase from 2022 to 2023, up from 10% share of electricity generated to 14.5%. Onshore wind, solar, bioenergy and hydro accounting for the other shares.
Looking ahead, there is continued promise with the Hornsea 3 wind farm investment now in motion and the National Grid earmarking a considerable amount of its £2bn budget to enhancing grid infrastructure (an historic sticking point on offshore wind developments).
All in all, a positive end to 2023 so here’s to 2024…
